Following a restoration, Johannes Verspronck’s portrait of a woman in a chair will be shown to the public again for the first time in decades. Beside Frans Hals, Verspronck was one of the most sought-after portraitists in the Haarlem of his time. The exhibition explores the immediate environment of both artists, their patrons and the social context in which they operated. Details of costume reveal the function of these portraits as display items. The genesis of the portrait is discussed as well as its restoration and provenance from one of the most famous collections in Hanau in the time of Goethe.
Nach seiner Restaurierung wird das Bildnis einer „Dame im Sessel“ von Johannes Verspronck erstmals seit Jahrzehnten wieder der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Neben dem heute weitaus bekannteren Künstlerkollegen Frans Hals war Verspronck im 17. Jahrhundert einer der gefragtesten Porträtisten in Haarlem. In der Ausstellung werden die spezifische künstlerische Situation der beiden Bildnismaler, ihre Auftraggeber und deren sozialer Kontext beleuchtet. Kostümdetails machen die repräsentative Funktion eines solchen Porträts anschaulich. Der Entstehungsprozess wird ebenso aufgezeigt wie die Restaurierung des Gemäldes und seine Herkunft aus einer der bekanntesten Hanauer Sammlungen der Goethezeit.
