Information
Brooklyn Museum’s European Art department holds more than 200 Dutch and Flemish works dating from ca. 1450 to 1800. Works on paper comprise most of the collection, including drawings by Jacob van Ruisdael and Adriaen van Ostade, and strong print examples from Rembrandt van Rijn, Anthony van Dyck, and Lucas van Leyden. Highlights from more than 40 paintings include a Gerrit Dou self-portrait (ca. 1631) and four manuscript illuminations (1521) by Simon Bening, along with work by Frans Hals, Meindert Hobbema, Thomas de Keyser, David Vinckboons, Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen, and Jacob Huysmans. The museum’s Decorative Arts and Design department preserves the Jan Martense Schenck House (ca. 1675–1676) and Nicholas Schenck House (ca. 1770–1775), two examples of Dutch colonial architecture, in addition to overseeing an important collection of furniture, including a late-seventeenth-century Dutch kas with a Brooklyn provenance, along with metalwork, ceramics, and glass made in both the Low Countries and Dutch North America.
