Information
The collection of the Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation numbers almost 11,000 artworks and is curated by – and on view at – the Serlachius Museums in Manta, Finland. The Dutch and Flemish Old Master section consists of approximately 60 works. Most are paintings, but there are also a small number of drawings. Highlights include a large painting by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Abraham Meeting Melchizedek, which is the earliest of the three versions known by the artist, Old Man with a Fur Hat, a portrait by the enigmatic artist known by his initials as Monogrammist I.S., and one of the versions of Madonna and Child (Madonna of the Cherries), attributed to the studio of Quentin Massys. Other artists represented in the collection include Adriaen Brouwer, Jan Miense Molenaer, Willem de Poorter, and Jan van Noordt. In addition, the museum owns works currently attributed to artists such as Jacob Jordaens, Johannes Verspronck and Jan van Ravesteyn. In recent years, the Foundation has started to concentrate more resources on the conservation of Old Masters, as well as research that is constantly shedding more light on the works and their attributions.
