Palazzo Bianco – Musei di Strada Nuova

White Palace – Strada Nuova Museums

Information

Since 2004 the collections of the Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Tursi are united in the Musei di Strada Nuova  The collections of Flemish paintings of the Musei di Strada Nuova are divided between the Palazzo Rosso “house museum” and Palazzo Bianco art gallery. The collection is known for the excellent quality of the artworks and the importance of the artists represented, spanning the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.

Most of the Flemish and Dutch works in the collections can be traced back to the tradition of strong commercial ties between Genoa and northern Europe during the early modern period. Masterpieces include Christ Giving His Blessing by Memling and Portrait of a Young Man by Dürer, as well as Gerard David’s majestic Cervara Altarpiece and a large Annunciation, set in a Flemish domestic interior, by Jan Provoost. The mid-sixeenth century is well represented by a Adoration of the Magi by Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Jan Massijs’ first dated panel, and work by Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer. Undisputed protagonists of the seventeenth century are on display, including work by Rubens, Van Dyck and his collaborator Jan Roos. Besides their work, lesser-known northern artists active in Genoa from the start of the seventeenth century are also represented, such as Jan Wildens, Jacques (Giacomo) Legi, Guilliam van Deynum and Cornelis de Wael. Dutch painting from the mid and late seventeenth century includes excellent works by Hendrick Avercamp, Jan Steen, Jan van der Neer and Aelbert Cuyp.
