Information
Set within the heart of Swansea and run by its council, is the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery: a center for the visual arts and a world-class gallery for Wales. The gallery has a significant permanent collection, covering a broad spectrum of the visual arts from old masters to contemporary artists, with an international collection of porcelain and Swansea China.
The gallery, founded through the bequest of Richard Glynn Vivian in 1911, holds approximately twenty paintings by Dutch and Flemish artists. Notable amongst these is a portrait of a lady by Bartholomeus van der Helst, a landscape by Jan Griffier, a hunting scene by Piat Joseph Sauvage, and decorative panels by Jacob de Wit.
Other works, attributed in the original 1911 catalogue to artists such as Agatha van der Mijn, Caspar Netscher, Adriaen van Ostrade, Gerard de Lairesse, and Jacob Jordaens, are likely to have been produced by followers of these artists. Some names which have also been suggested by experts include: Jacob van Strij, circle of Gerard Hoet, and circle of Sebastiaen Vrancx.
