The Graves Gallery is home to Sheffield’s visual art collection, which comprises more than 6,000 works spanning British and European painting, sculpture and works on paper. The foundations of this collection are bequests by two key patrons, Sheffield businessmen John Newton Mappin (1800–1883) and John George Graves (1865–1945), who believed that Sheffield was worthy of a nationally important art collection.
The collection includes a small but significant collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings. Highlights include The 2nd Marquis of Hamilton by Daniël Mijtens, The Yard of an Inn by David Teniers II and Landscape with Cottages on the Dunes by Jan Van Goyen, as well as winter landscapes by Thomas Heeremans, Joos de Momper II (attributed to) and Aert van der Neer.
