Martin D’Arcy Collection – Loyola University Museum of Art

Information

The Martin D’Arcy Collection is one of the finest collections of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art in the Midwest. It is particularly noted for its diverse holdings of three-dimensional objects that embody both the religious and secular aspects of European life.

Medieval highlights include devotional ivory, painted sculpture, and enameled liturgical objects. In the Renaissance, the D’Arcy is particularly strong in objects commissioned to celebrate family events such as marriage and childbirth. The collection includes The Way to Calvary by a follower of Hieronymus Bosch. Baroque works include Christ Among the Doctors (ca. 1630) by Matthias Stomer, a Dutch-born follower of Caravaggio, and The Flagellation of Christ (ca.1630) by the Italian Alessandro Algardi and the Flemish artist François Du Quesnoy.
