Since its foundation in 1913, the collection of the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) has grown to more than 13,000 works of art. The seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish collection contains Old Master paintings, prints and decorative arts. Many of the paintings belonged to Kodak founder George Eastman, including MAG’s iconic Portrait of a Young Man in an Armchair (ca.1660) by Rembrandt.
Besides, the Dutch and Flemish portraits in the collection include works by Anthony van Dyck, Jan van Ravesteyn, Salomon and Jan de Bray, Jacob Jordaens, Dirck van Santvoort, Nicolaes Maes and Frans Hals. The collection also includes landscapes by Jan van de Cappelle, Joos de Momper and Jan Both, and still lifes by Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Rachel Ruysch, and Gaspar Peeter de Verbrugghen II.
Other highlights include various works by Peter Paul Rubens, genre scenes by David Teniers the Younger and Jan Steen, a mythological scene by Govaert Flinck, and a decorative animal painting by Frans Snyders.
The collection of Netherlandish prints is represented by artists such as Adrian van Ostade, Jan Both, Rembrandt, Cornelis Dusart, Herman von Swanevelt, Jan Pietersz Saenredam, Ferdinand Bol, and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout.
