CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dole

Information

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dole holds a collection of early Flemish and Dutch paintings numbering a hundred or so works. In addition to a masterpiece by Peter van Boucle—an exquisite still life—key works stand out across a range of artistic genres: a precious Virgin and Child by the Master of Saint Giles, scenes of military conquest by Adam Frans van der Meulen, a remarkable trompe l’œil by Cornelis Norbertus Gijsbrechts featuring hunting paraphernalia, and a Concert champêtre by Frans Wouters. Restorations carried out over the past 25 years have allowed works of the first rank to emerge, such as an astonishing Juno Descending into Hades to Ask the Furies to Drive Athamas Mad by Jan Tengnagel and a large panel featuring Scenes of the Passion of Christ attributed to Cornelis Engebrechtsz. The fine-quality works in this group, which also include paintings by Bonaventura Peeters, Pieter Jansz. Quast, Victor Wolfvoet, Roelant Savery, and Frans Francken (II), are a source of pride to the institution.
