Information
Painting of the northern school is a jewel in the crown of the Châlonnais museums, comprising a remarkable collection of more than 120 works. This exceptional collection, focusing on Flemish and Dutch art from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, dates back to 1794 and the time of the Revolutionary confiscations, one of which was the Winter Landscape by Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel (I).
Over the decades, the collection has been considerably enhanced thanks to significant bequests during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by collectors and scholars such as Charles Picot, the Abbé Hermant, Jules Garinet, Jean-Baptiste Joannès, and Henri-Charles Jolly.
More recently, the acquisitions policy has enabled a number of major works to be added to the collection: The Burning of Troy by Kerstiaen de Keuninck (acquired 2005), Architectural Capriccio by Jan Tilens (2006), Moses Leading the Children of Israel Into the Promised Land by Vincent Malo (2008), The Sacking and Pillaging of a Monastery by Abraham Hondius (2009), and The Pleasures of Winter by Denijs van Alsloot (2024).
