Musée Charles Friry

Information

The Musée Charles Friry has in its collection thirty-three Flemish paintings, of which the majority remain anonymous. It is, however, perfectly possible to name the artists they call to mind: Jan Abrahamsz. Beerstraten, Nicolaes Berchem, Jheronimus Bosh, Jan Brueghel (I), Gerard David, Anthony van Dyck (copy), Frans Francken (II), Cornelis de Heem, Abraham Govaerts, Rembrandt, Rubens (copy), Friedrich Sustris (copy), David Teniers (II), Gillis van Tilborch, Lucas van Uden, Maerten de Vos (copy), Simon de Vos, Denys Calvaert (copy).

Works have been attributed to Pieter van Bloemen, Jasper van der Lanen, and Herman van Swanevelt. The original portrait of Fr. Cornelius Musius, regarded as a martyr by Dutch Catholics, is also part of the collection.

These paintings were acquired by the collector Charles Friry in the Lorraine region between 1830 and 1870.

The museum also houses various Flemish artifacts including two Mechelen alabasters of the seventeenth century, three examples of Oudenaarde tapestry from around 1500, and a monumental Dutch wardrobe of the seventeenth century.
