CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Musée Granet

Information

Northern and Flemish art influenced the culture of Provence from the fifteenth century onward and established itself in Aix-en-Provence in the seventeenth. Founded in 1838, this museum in Aix presents a diverse collection resulting from the contributions of various collectors connected with the city. In addition to François-Marius Granet, the collection was enlarged by illustrious figures such as François Sallier, Fauris de Saint Vincens, and Bourguignon de Fabregoules, who had a special interest in these schools.

The museum is enriched by masterpieces such as a self-portrait by Rembrandt, portraits by Thomas de Keyser and Peter Paul Rubens, a Virgin in Glory by Robert Campin, The Feast of Achelous after Peter Paul Rubens, and a mythological fresco by Jacob Jordaens. It also shows to best advantage numerous genre scenes by Ludolf de Jongh, landscapes by Paul Bril and David Teniers (I), and even miniatures. Thus the Musée Granet bears witness to the impact of Flemish and Dutch art through the works of major workshops that have made a deep impression on the history of art.
