Information
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City is recognized as one of America’s finest art museums, with a collection of over 42,000 objects, including a distinguished group of Dutch and Flemish works. Masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Gerrit Dou, Joachim Anthonisz Wtewael, and Peter Paul Rubens are among the highlights. Recent acquisitions include a late painting by Rachel Ruysch, showcasing exotic flowers and offering insights into seventeenth- and eighteenth-century women artists and global trade. The museum also contains paintings by Dutch Caravaggisti like Dirck van Baburen, and Hendrick ter Brugghen. Its early Netherlandish collection, though small, is exceptional, with works by Hans Memling, Petrus Christus, Albrecht Bouts, and Hieronymus Bosch. The collection boasts over 300 works on paper, with drawings by Rembrandt and others. Highlights in the decorative arts collection include a set of eight Flemish tapestries, and a rare, recently acquired seventeenth-century travel cutlery set with a leather case.
