Information
Since it was founded as a Museum and Art Gallery in 1878 at Nottingham Castle, Nottingham City Museums and Art Galleries has been collecting a diverse range of fine and decorative arts from the medieval period to the present day. It includes 23 works from Netherlandish artists, some of which are now on permanent display in the galleries within the castle. These include two tavern scenes by Pieter Jacob Horemans and Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder and two ‘merry company’ scenes, by Anthonie Palamedesz and (attributed to) Pieter Codde. The collection also contains two beautiful still life paintings by Barend Van der Meer and two paintings of Rest on the Flight into Egypt, by Jan Breughel and (attributed to) Master of the Antwerp Adoration. Landscapes by Jan Siberechts and Jan Wijnants are also on display, as is a painting of Venus and Cupid by Adriaen van der Werff.
