CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Portland Art Museum

Information

The oldest art museum on the West Coast has a spirited collection of Dutch and Flemish works, anchored by Van Dyck’s portrait of Cardinal Rivarola, and a superb selection of prints and drawings by M.C. Escher. The museum also has a good selection of prints by Rembrandt, Coornhert, and Goltzius, among others.

The modest group of Dutch paintings includes the fine yet enigmatic pendant pair of tronies signed G.A.R. in the style of Gerrit Dou, Gerbrand van den Eeckhout’s Volumnia before Coriolanus, as well as fine still lifes by Willem Kalf and Jan van de Velde II. The group of works given by the Kress Foundation includes Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen’s Circumcision of Christ.

Besides the Van Dyck, the Flemish treasures include landscapes by Jan de Beer, Joos de Momper, Bonaventura Peeters and a striking portrait by Adriaen van Ysenbrandt.
