Information
The Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, is the oldest and largest museum in the state. Founded in 1927, its encyclopedic holdings feature a significant collection of Netherlandish, Dutch, and Flemish art, across paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, textiles, and works on paper. Major Dutch works include Rembrandt, David Teniers, Jan Steen, Abraham Storck, Gerrit Berckheyde, Jacob Duck, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Pieter Claesz., among many others. Flanders is represented by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Hendrick van Somer, David Teniers, and Jacob Jordaens. Netherlandish works include significant examples by Jan Brueghel and a pair of pendants by Hendrick Goltzius. Artist self-portraits include Gabriël Metsu and Jan de Bray. Recent acquisitions of works by Jacob Cuyp, Abraham Willaerts, and Peter Gerrtisz. van Roestraten have expanded the narratives of Holland and Flanders in the seventeenth century.
