Information
The paintings gallery at Schloss Johannisburg is based on the original collection, which was established by the last prince elector and archbishop of Mainz, Friedrich Karl von Erthal. Today, the collection still resembles the taste and collecting preferences of the prince elector: genre painting, as well as Flemish and German landscape painting. The collection was further enriched by an impressive Passion series by Rembrandt’s last student, Aert de Gelder. The focus of the Old German gallery centers around several works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his students.
