CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Fralin Museum of Art

Information

The collections of Dutch and Flemish art of the period 1400-1800 in The Fralin Museum of Art are relatively small but nonetheless useful for teaching the history and connoisseurship of Netherlandish art of this period.  They also offer students opportunities to curate small exhibitions drawn from these collections and also in combination with other works in The Fralin and in UVA’s Special Collections Library.

The paintings collection comprises 22 pictures. It includes a group of Dutch history paintings, notably works by Jan Steen, Nikolaus Knupfer, and Jan Tengnagel; and a number of landscapes, among them fine works by Esaias van de Velde and Jan de Lagoor. The collection of 20 drawings includes work by Ludolf Bakhuizen, Nicolaes Berchem, Willem Buytewech, and Abraham Rademaker. The collection of 165 prints is more representative of Dutch and Flemish production of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Strong impressions by Lucas van Leyden, Hendrick Goltzius, Claes Jansz. Visscher, Hendrick Goudt, and Anthony van Dyck stand out in the broader collection.
