The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has a vacancy for an Associate or Assistant Curator of European Painting and Sculpture. The deadline for applications is 16 August 2019.

Reporting to the Curator and Department Head of European Painting and Sculpture and American Art, the Associate/Assistant Curator provides specific expertise in European Painting and Sculpture 1400–1800, supporting LACMA’s pre-1900 European holdings with particular areas of quality and depth in 16th–18th century Italian painting and sculpture, and 17th century Dutch painting.

Primary areas of responsibility include developing and fostering exhibitions, research and writing, acquisitions, and donor cultivation, with a focus on the diverse audiences that LACMA serves. In addition, the Associate/Assistant Curator serves as a department liaison to Conservation, Education and other departments within the Museum, all under the supervision of the Department Head.

The ability to work collaboratively is essential. Exceptional written and oral communication skills are required, including the ability to address academic audiences and the general public with equal skill and passion. The ideal candidate will have broad intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in connecting time periods, cultures, etc. in an encyclopedic museum context.

The qualified candidate will have a PhD in Art History or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in 17th Century Dutch and/or 16th-18th century Italian art, and at least 2 years museum experience. Languages commensurate with area of expertise required. Candidates from historically underrepresented groups in the curatorial field are especially encouraged to apply.
