BRON Research Center Opens in Bruges

The new research center BRON in Bruges officially opens to the public today. BRON is the new scholarly research hub established by Musea Brugge for the study of the city’s art and heritage collection. Together with the forthcoming BRUSK museum and the surrounding museum park, BRON forms the vital center of the Bruges Museum Quarter.

The new BRON research center will facilitate in-depth research and actively focus on disseminating research findings. The building houses the museum library, a consultation space for the Print Room (opening in 2027), various meeting rooms, and offices for Musea Brugge’s researchers. Furthermore, it is directly connected to the back-office of BRUSK, where a significant portion of the collection will be stored and where the conservation studios will be located in the future. BRON is linked via a passage to BRUSK, which will house the most fragile collections—paintings and works on paper. The connection between the two buildings allows for a safe and efficient exchange among the depot, conservation studios, and research center.

Art Historical Research in Bruges

As one of the three Flemish Cultural Heritage Institutions, Musea Brugge serves as a leading example in collection research. Eight full-time Musea Brugge researchers, working alongside external experts, are dedicated daily to the study of the Bruges collection. Four research pillars guide Musea Brugge’s scholarly agenda. Art from the Burgundian and Habsburg periods remains a major focus, supplemented by research into the long nineteenth century, the decorative arts and crafts, and contemporary art and culture.
