As of 1 December, the Mauritshuis has acquired a historic building at Korte Vijverberg 4 in The Hague, just around the corner from the museum. The additional square metres available in the historic property create an opportunity to open a Mauritshuis Education Center and expand facilities for receptions and events. In the longer term, the Mauritshuis will also be able to add extra exhibition space inside the museum.
Mauritshuis Education Center
With the addition of 800 m² at Korte Vijverberg 4, the Mauritshuis can reorganize and expand several departments. A key development is the possibility of opening an entirely new Mauritshuis Education Center (working title), comprising multiple educational spaces instead of the single room currently available. The representative rooms on Korte Vijverberg will also provide more space for events. In addition, the building offers the possibility to create extra office space for the expanded staff. With the relocation of the current Art Studio, the Mauritshuis will in time be able to add 65 m² to its exhibition space (increasing from 175 m² to 240 m²).
Current Situation
Since the last renovation in 2012–2014, visitor numbers at the Mauritshuis have increased. In 2025, the museum expects to welcome nearly 500,000 visitors, which is the maximum capacity of the current building. Meanwhile, the need for educational activities continues to grow. The existing Art Studio – in use since 2014 – has become too small and is in need of renewal. At present, there is no space available for adult education. The possibilities for venue hire, an important source of income for the museum, have also reached their limits.
The aim is to have Korte Vijverberg 4 fully ready for all new activities by 2028.
