The Joods Historisch Museum acquires Amsterdam view of the Great Synagogue and the Portuguese Synagogue by Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde

In December 2008 the Joods Historisch Museum acquired an important 17th-century view of Amsterdam by Gerrit Berckheyde (1638-98). The painting shows the Great Synagogue and the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. The latter had just been finished at the time of painting.

Curator Edward van Voolen has been kind enough to provide us with the English version of his article on the painting, which you can read here. (Word document, 73 kB).
