After a rebuilding and renovation campaign that lasted eight years, the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg was reopened this afternoon by the governor of Zeeland, Karla Peijs.

Preliminary information from the museum website

The Zeeuws Museum will be closed for reconstruction until summer 2007. The new design by the architectural firm Rothuizen Doorn ‘t Hooft will make the building safer and more accessible to visitors, and will meet the most recent standards for the conservation of collections. The new entrance will be on the magnificent old Abbey Square (Abdijplein), where the museum will also have a terrace.

The interior of the Zeeuws Museum will be completely redesigned by the well-known Belgian architect Christian Kieckens. When it reopens in 2007, its fine collections of china, silver and paintings, as well as the famous tapestries, will be presented in a completely new light. Many exhibits, including ones from the ethnographic and traditional costume collections, will be on display for the very first time. The new presentations will include a series of films made specially for the museum by artists Paul and Menno de Nooijer. There will be attractive guidebooks and handy video guides for visitors to use. Famous Zeelanders will describe their own favourite routes through the new museum, which will regularly hold temporary exhibitions on a variety of topics.
