On 5 September Radio 4 of the BBC announced the results of its vote for the greatest painting in Britain. The total number of accepted votes was 118,111. Six of the ten painters are British, one is French, one Italian and two are from the Netherlands: Jan van Eyck and Vincent van Gogh.
The listing:
Greatest painting: Fighting Temeraire by Joseph Mallord Turner with 31892 votes (which was 27.00% of the accepted votes)
2nd place: The Hay Wain – Constable with 21711 votes (18.38% of the accepted votes)
3rd place: A Bar at the Follies Bergere – Manet with 13218 votes (11.19% of the accepted votes)
4th place: The Arnolfini Portrait – Jan van Eyck with 11298 votes ( 9.57% of the accepted votes)
5th place: Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy – Hockney with 8890 votes (7.53% of the accepted votes)
6th place: Sunflowers – Van Gogh with 8603 votes (7.28% of the accepted votes)
7th place: Rev Walker Skating – Raeburn with 8189 votes (6.93% of the accepted votes)
8th place: The Last of England – Maddox Brown with 5283 votes (4.47% of the accepted votes)
9th place: The Baptism of Christ – Piero della Francesca with 5028 votes (4.26% of the accepted votes)
10th place: Rake’s Progress – Hogarth with 3999 votes (3.39% of the accepted votes)
