Sculptor of Amsterdam

On the afternoon of 4 September, CODART organized a CODARTfocus meeting in partnership with the Royal Palace Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum, and Ards | the platform for medieval sculpture, dedicated to the exhibition Artus Quellinus – Sculptor of Amsterdam at the Royal Palace Amsterdam.

Participants gathered at the Rijksmuseum’s Ateliergebouw with an introduction to the exhibition by curators Liesbeth van Noortwijk (Royal Palace Amsterdam) and Bieke van der Mark (Rijksmuseum), followed by an exclusive after-hours visit to the exhibition at the Royal Palace Amsterdam.

Artus Quellinus – Sculptor of Amsterdam marks the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist’s work. The Royal Palace provides a particularly fitting venue, given that its sculptural decorations represent Quellinus’s magnum opus. In addition to significant loans from the Rijksmuseum and other national and international collections, many of which rarely travel, the exhibition offers valuable context into Quellinus’s oeuvre. It delves deeper into the antique and contemporary influences of his art and includes works by the brothers François and Jerôme Du Quesnoy, Lucas Faydherbe, Artus Quellinus the Younger, Rombout Verhulst, Bartholomeus Eggers, and Giusto Le Court.

This CODARTfocus is made possible with thanks to the generous support of the Royal Palace Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum.
