The Berlin Gemäldegalerie houses an internationally outstanding collection of early Netherlandish and French paintings. Until now, however, there has been no scholarly catalogue of these works. Those who wished to study them had to rely on monographic publications or the rather brief entries in the 1978 Catalogue of the Gemäldegalerie. The present scholarly catalogue is devoted to the works of artists who began their careers in or before 1480. The detailed entries are based on art historical and technical research and were written in an interdisciplinary collaboration.
In 52 entries, 69 individual paintings are discussed. All the important masters of the period are represented, many of them with major works – such as the Madonna in the Church by Jan van Eyck, the Miraflores Altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden, the donor panel of Étienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet, the only known painting by the early Dutch master Albert van Ouwater or the Montforte Altarpiece by Hugo van der Goes.
A book presentation will be held at the Gemäldegalerie. The date will be announced later.
