A book has been published to mark the retirement of Gregor J.M. Weber as Head of the Fine Arts Department of the Rijksmuseum. Art Stories from the Netherlands and Italy, 1550-1800 includes contributions by forty colleagues from the Netherlands and abroad. It is compiled by Fred G. Meijer, Carla van de Puttelaar and Lisanne Wepler.
The 38 essays contain new and previously unpublished material. They discuss drawings, paintings and prints by artists such as Pieter Bruegel in the sixteenth century to Hendrik Andriessen in the late eighteenth century. Various artists are defined (anew), such as David Colijns, Nicolaes Fick, Abraham van de Poel and Cornelia de Rijk. Works of art and their themes are analyzed and explained, among them sheet music in a still life, dancing animals, ‘Art for Favour’, kermiskoeken, the Supper at Emmaus and collections. Connections are made and suggested, such as between Bruegel and Bosch, Adam Willaerts and Magdalena de Passe, Rembrandt and Niccolo dell’Abbate and Veronese and Otto Dix. Works by a variety of artists are described in detail and/or added to their respective oeuvres: Bartholomeus Breenbergh, Jan Brueghel, Gerrit Dou, Caesar van Everdingen, Johannes Glauber and Gerard de Lairesse, Jacob Grimm, Wolfgang Heimbach, Victor Honoré Janssens, Isaac de Jouderville, Adriaan de Lelie, Frans van Mieris, Clara Peeters, Rembrandt, Joris van Schooten, Tintoretto, Cornelis Troost, Adriaen van der Werff, Thomas van der Wilt and Emmanuel de Witte. A list of publications by Gregor Weber completes this richly illustrated Liber Amicorum.
