CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Print Quarterly December 2025 (Vol. XLII, No. 4) Issue Published

An Article, one Note and a Book Review in the December 2025 issue of Print Quarterly may be of interest to CODART members for their material relating to Dutch and Flemish artists.

Xanthe Brooke’s article on an unpublished album of Jusepe de Ribera prints at Knowsley Hall, Merseyside mentions the fate of some of the artist’s etching plates when they were sold to publishers such as Frans van den Wyngaerde in Antwerp. Additionally, it details the Riberesque sets of prints published and compiled by the engraver and publisher Abraham Blooteling.

Maik Bindewald’s Note connects a Holy Family gouache in Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen to Albrecht Dürer’s Circumcision of Christ woodcut, specifically citing the reversal and adaption of the Christ Child figure. In doing so, an attribution to Dürer as the creator of the gouache is supported.

Stefano de Bosio’s review of Ekphrastic Image-Making in Early Modern Europe, 1500–1700 mentions several instances of ekphrasis in Dutch and Flemish art, such as Abraham van Diepenbeeck’s design for the engraving Le Chaos by Cornelis Bloemaert and Theodor Matham, or Hendrick Goltzius’s engagement with Ovid’s Metamorphoses in his Landscape with Venus and Adonis drawing.
