Launching today, the interactive website Closer to Bosch (closertobosch.org) allows users to view the works of Jheronimus Bosch in meticulous detail. The site will be formally presented this afternoon during a festive gathering at the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center (JBAC) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Closer to Bosch
Closer to Bosch grants art historians and researchers full access to the images acquired by the Bosch Research and Conservation Project (BRCP), which operated between 2010 and 2016. In recent years, these images have been reprocessed with financial support from the JBAC, ensuring the highest possible quality.

- The Viewer can be set to present different imagery types side-by-side for comparative analysis.
Utilizing extremely high resolutions, the site allows users to study and compare the paintings of Jheronimus Bosch, his workshop and followers in unprecedented detail. Users have access to various image types, including visible light and infrared light documentation. The imagery is complemented by scholarly texts drawn from the BRCP’s publications. Additional paintings and Bosch’s drawings will be integrated into the platform at a later date.
This resource will be an essential tool for anyone engaged with Bosch’s oeuvre and late medieval Netherlandish art.
Bosch Research and Conservation Project (BRCP)
The BRCP was founded in 2010 as part of the preparations for the landmark exhibition Jheronimus Bosch–Visions of Genius (2016) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The project established a new standard for art historical research, being the first initiative ever to examine and document a large group of works by a single painter with standardized procedures and the same equipment. A core achievement of the BRCP was the systematic documentation of all surveyed paintings in both visible and infrared light at extremely high resolutions.
The award-winning project culminated in the publication of two major publications on Bosch’s oeuvre.
