Musea Brugge Acquires Flemish Primitive

Musea Brugge acquired an important panel from the fifteenth-century Bruges Master of the Legend of Saint Ursula. The panel was offered to Musea Brugge by an auction house in New York. It will go on display at the Groeningemuseum in March 2019.

From the Flemish Art Collection, 18 December 2018

The panel, which is in an excellent condition, shows Saint Veronica presenting a sudarium with the face of the Christ. The painting was on display at the 1994 Memling exhibition in Bruges. The Master of the Legend of Saint Ursula was a highly productive, yet regrettably anonymous master who was active in Bruges at the end of the 15th Century. His style includes references to Hans Memling. The acquired painting refers to Memling’s depictions of the face of Christ.
