J.R.J. van Asperen de Boer and Infrared Reflectography (IRR): A Tribute

Symposium: 26 May 2023

In the 1990s, the research material of Prof Dr J.R.J. van Asperen de Boer was transferred to the RKD, which forms the basis of the RKD’s collection of Technical Documentation. To honor Van Asperen de Boer († 2020), the RKD has decided to organize a triennial seminar on technical art history.

The first seminar takes place on May 26, 2023 at 13:00 and will be about infrared reflectography (IRR), the research method developed by Van Asperen de Boer that allows for optimal penetration of the paint layers of a painting to reveal the sketch or drawing underneath.

Speakers will highlight Van Asperen de Boer’s many contributions, his collaborations with art historians and scientists, his experiences as a university teacher, and special discoveries made by IRR. Two PhD students will also present their research, and discuss the importance of existing IRR material from the Van Asperen de Boer/RKD archive.
