In Small Wonders, the Rijksmuseum focuses for the first time on the art of carving miniatures with some sixty or so figurines, miniature altars, prayer nuts, monstrances, skulls and other memento mori boxwood pendants. These astonishingly finely carved luxury ‘toys for the soul’ feature the most ingenious religious scenes. Virtuoso ‘micro-carving’ on a minute scale sought the boundaries of the practicable.
