Study Day: Hugo van der Goes – Face to Face with Death

The Death of the Virgin by Hugo van der Goes is one of the most important works in Musea Brugge’s collection of Flemish Primitive art. Between 2018 and 2022, the painting was subjected to an extensive and intensive process of restoration, the results of which are impressive. From autumn 2022, this masterpiece features both literally and figuratively as the central point of the exhibition Face to face with Death. Hugo van der Goes, old masters and new interpretations in the Sint-Janshospitaal.

During this study day, curators and experts will discuss the making of the exhibition and present their research related to the themes of the exhibition. Among others they examine the context of the origins of The Death of the Virgin and Hugo van der Goes as an artist, as well as themes such as Marian devotion in the late Middle Ages and the connection between late Medieval theater and the visual arts.

Confirmed speakers include Noël Geirnaert, Margriet Hoogvliet, Stephan Kemperdick, Bernhard Ridderbos and Mark Trowbridge.
