CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Chrysler Museum of Art

Information

The Chrysler Museum of Artā€™s Dutch and Flemish collection showcases the richness and diversity of artistic achievement in the Low Countries from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. While collecting in this area began early in the museumā€™s history, the collection was transformed in 1971 by Walter P. Chrysler, Jr.ā€™s landmark gift. Focused primarily on painting, it highlights the technical brilliance and innovative spirit of artists like Lucas van Leyden, Jan Weenix, Peter Paul Rubens, David Teniers, and Ferdinand Bol. Highlights include Maarten van Heemskerckā€™s vibrant Concert of Apollo and the Muses on Mount Helicon, Albert Boutsā€™ haunting Christ as the Man of Sorrows, and Jan Gossaertā€™s exquisite Virgin and Child. Originally the central panel of a portable altarpiece, Gossaertā€™s work epitomizes delicate light and refined detail, demonstrating the artistā€™s complete mastery of his medium.Ā
