The Toledo Museum of Art’s collection of Netherlandish, Dutch, and Flemish art comprises more than 200 paintings, a significant collection of decorative arts, particularly ceramics, prints (particularly strong in Rembrandt etchings), and a smaller group of drawings from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The collection includes major works by Jan Gossaert, the Master of the Morrison Triptych, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, Rachel Ruysch, Frans Hals, Maria van Oosterwijck, Willem van de Velde, and Aelbert Cuyp, among others.
Distinguished by the quality and condition of its holdings, the collection continues to grow through strategic acquisitions. In recent years, the museum has focused on acquiring works by female makers (e.g., Van Oosterwijck) as well as works that enable the museum to present Dutch art in a global context (e.g., Dirk Valkenburg).
The museum is currently undergoing a major renovation and reinstallation project, to open in the fall of 2027, which will present the museum’s collection chronologically and allow it to place European art, and Dutch art especially, in a broader, historical and art-historical context.
