Wednesday 19 June (optional): Flemish Altarpieces

On Wednesday 19 June you can sign up for an optional excursion to a church and two cathedrals in the Stockholm area, where several sixteenth-century Flemish Altarpieces are kept in situ. Carina Jacobsson, lecturer at the Art Historical department of  Uppsala University will guide us this day.

In the morning we will travel together from Stockholm to the small Villberga kyrka. The church’s structure dates from the end of the thirteenth century and – a beautiful highlight – its original fifteenth-century vault paintings have been preserved. The altar retable, which was made in the Borman studio between 1515 and 1520, is mentioned for the first time in the inventory of the Villberga church in 1749. The work is generally believed to have been produced for a different church, since it is very large for the little village church and because of a seventeenth-century overpainting on one of the outer panels.

In the afternoon we will visit the Västerås Domkyrka, where the interior scarcely suffered from the plundering that took place during the Reformation. In the church you can see artworks including monumental retables from Antwerp, Brussels, and Lübeck – thus demonstrating the size of the export market of such altarpieces. The trip then continues to Strängnäs Domkyrka, the medieval character of which has also largely been preserved. Several Brabant retables can also be seen here, including the large Passion retable on the high altar that was completed in Brussels around 1480-90.
