CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Washington & Baltimore

This fall, CODART traveled to the US for a three-day CODARTfocus in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art (NGA), the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in Washington D.C., and the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). This visit gave members the opportunity to explore special exhibitions and numerous interesting collections, together with their international colleagues.

As a federal institution, the National Gallery of Art (NGA) was required to close due to the U.S. Government Shutdown that started on 1 October 2025. Therefore, our planned program for Monday 6 October was canceled and an alternative program arranged. Members were encouraged to visit one of the Smithsonian Museums in the morning. In the afternoon, the Royal Netherlands Embassy generously offered us a space to host a lecture given by Alexandra Libby and Brooks Rich (both NGA) about their exhibition Little Beasts: Art, Wonder, and the Natural World. This was followed by a panel discussion on the intersection of art, science, and natural history, moderated by Alexandra Libby. Panelists were Dario Robleto (Artist), Floyd Shockley (Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History), Darrin Lunde (Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History) and Brooks Rich (NGA).

On Tuesday, guests visited the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA). Virginia Treanor (NMWA) introduced the exhibition Women Artists from Antwerp to Amsterdam, 1600-1750, followed by two lectures complementing the exhibition and an opportunity to explore NMWA’s permanent collection.

On the final day, Wednesday, participants traveled by coach to Baltimore. The day included a special viewing of Dutch and Flemish books at the George Peabody Library (Johns Hopkins University), followed by a visit to the Walters Museum. A guided tour of the European galleries and a viewing of Flemish and Dutch works on paper at the Baltimore Museum of Art, led by Lara Yeager-Crasselt (BMA), took place in the afternoon.
