Holger Jacob-Friesen Appointed Director of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden

The Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden announced the appointment of  Prof. Dr. Holger Jacob-Friesen as the new director of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery).

Holger Jacob-Friesen, a CODART member since 2008, succeeds former director Dr. Stephan Koja on March 1. In addition to Old Master paintings, he will also be responsible for the Sculpture Collection until 1800. Both collections are housed in the Zwinger, the palatial complex on the banks of the Elbe River.

Since 1999, Jacob-Friesen has held various positions at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. He was appointed Chief Curator in 2008 and has been Head of the Collection and Science Department since 2011. In Karlsruhe, he has organized numerous exhibitions, including a major exhibition on the German artist Hans Baldung Grien (2019-2020). In 2021, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Art History at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
