Sir Christopher White (1930-2026)

The Ashmolean Museum announced the passing of its former director Sir Christopher White CVO FBA on 8 January 2026.

A distinguished scholar of Dutch and Flemish art, Sir Christopher was Director of the Ashmolean Museum for twelve years from 1985 until his retirement in 1997 having previously worked at the British Museum, Colnaghi, London, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. He was an Associate Member of CODART from 1998 through 2017.
