New CODARTfeature Published: The Allure of Maarten van Heemskerck’s Roman Drawings

A new feature has been published on the CODART website.

Due to an urgently needed conservation measure, one of the two albums of Roman drawings by Maarten van Heemskerck held by the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin was recently unbound. This presented the unique opportunity to show the double-sided sheets individually and in their entirety, as well as to conduct material analysis. Curator Christien Melzer shares more about the current exhibition and research.

“The Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin owns two spectacular albums containing 173 drawings made by Maarten van Heemskerck during his stay in Rome between 1532 and 1536/7. They represent 86% of the artist’s entire known Roman oeuvre of some 200 drawings and are among the oldest and most valuable sources of visual information about the Eternal City.”  Continue reading…
