Rembrandt: drawings and prints in the Polish collections: critical catalogue

The aim of this work is to present a reconsideration of Rembrandt’s works on paper that can be found in the Polish public collections. This publication is a result of a research project, initiated by the National Museum in Warsaw and contributed to by 10 eminent institutions: the National Museum in Gdansk, the National Museum in Krakow, the National Museum in Poznan, the University Library in Warsaw, the Princes Czartoryski Foundation in Krakow, the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow, the Polish Academy of Art and Sciences Library in Krakow, the Ossolinski National Institute and Museum of Count Lubomirski in Wroclaw, the Art Museum in Lodz and – last but not least – the National Museum in Warsaw.

Rembrandt’s anniversaries were a good reason to examine once again – while 50 years have passed since the last substantial exhibition of Rembrandt’s oeuvre in the Polish collections – his drawings and prints according to the most recent methods of scientific analysis. Some of the drawings have been reattributed according to new research while, in the field of prints, editions and states have been verified meticulously. This catalogue also brings to light impressions and compositions which had never been presented anywhere else before. They are the new acquisitions, that have enriched the collections mentioned above since the exhibition, which took place 50 years ago.

In this book the fully illustrated catalogue of drawings and prints is preceded by four essays on various aspects of alterations in the attributions of Rembrandt’s drawings and prints, the stormy history of collecting Rembrandt in Poland and methods of paper analyses (with their prospects and impediments).

This publication comprises also English summaries of all the essays, photos and draughts of watermarks and numerous concordances.
