From the website of the Rubenianum, 28 August 2018

The Rubenianum is receiving the archive of the American art historian Prof. Walter S. Gibson. Gibson is the definitive authority on Bruegel research. His archive comprises the result of more than 60 years of research on the 15th- and 16th-century Netherlandish and Flemish masters.

The American art historian Prof. Walter S. Gibson (°1932) has gifted his extensive archive to the Rubenianum. Gibson researched and published on Bosch and primarily on Bruegel since the 1970s. He assembled more than 60 years worth of material on the 15th and 16th-century Netherlandish and Flemish artists.

The archive of 14 running metres consists of 74 boxes and weighs nearly 1 metric ton. It contains a considerable amount of unpublished material. The bibliographical apparatus is of particular interest. Thanks to the thematic and iconographic nature it will allow researchers to be able to retrieve the most obscure publications with respect to Bruegel research. The archive is currently being inventoried and opened up within the context of the Bruegel year.
