Jørgen Wadum takes Ph.D. at University of Amsterdam with dissertation on technical art history

Last Thursday, 2 July 2009, CODART-member Jørgen Wadum successfully defended his dissertation Technical art history: painters’ supports and studio practices of Rembrandt, Dou and Vermeer in the Agnietenkapel in Amsterdam and was awarded a doctor’s degree. His promotor was Associate CODART-member Dr. Jan Piet Filedt Kok

Jørgen Wadum’s dissertation deals with various aspects of technical art history. The first section sheds light on the history of materials, especially the rigid supports as panels and copper plates chosen by artists in the early seventeenth century. In particular, Wadum focuses on conservation research and guidelines for the safekeeping of paintings.

The second part of Wadum’s dissertation consists of studies and observations of the studio practices of Dutch artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Gerrit Dou and Johannes Vermeer.

CODART congratulates Jørgen Wadum with this great accomplishment
