The Louvre May Buy a Rembrandt Portrait from the Rothschild Collection

Rembrandt’s The Standard Bearer has been classified as a ‘national treasure’ by the French government. According to The Art Newspaper, France’s Journal officiel published a decree last week that gives French museums the option to purchase the painting as its export license now has been deferred. The Louvre has 30 months to raise enough funds to purchase the masterpiece and prevent it from the leaving the country. The portrait belonged to the French branch of the Rothschild family for more than 180 years.
