From 11 October 2019 until 16 February 2020, Museum Prinsenhof Delft organizes the exhibition Pieter de Hooch in Delft. From the shadow of Vermeer. This is the first monographic exhibition on Pieter De Hooch (1629 – ca. 1679) in the Netherlands, and focuses on De Hooch’s career in Delft. A CODARTfocus will be dedicated to the exhibition on 28 October 2019.
The catalogue, which features contributions by the museum’s curators, guest researchers and RKD staff, contains interesting results of new research into De Hooch’s relation to his predecessors and contemporaries, the locations he depicted, his technique and the appreciation of his paintings throughout the centuries. As such, the catalogue forms an important addition to Peter Sutton’s 1980 monograph on the artist and his 1998 exhibition catalogue (Dulwich Picture Gallery, London/Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford).
On the occasion of the exhibition, Museum Prinsenhof Delft and the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History are organizing a symposium, which on the one hand will present the results of the research carried out in preparation for the exhibition. On the other hand, the symposium will shed light on De Hooch as an artist in the Delft context and on the more general phenomenon of local schools of painting in the Dutch Republic.
