CODARTfocus Look Again – The Met’s Reinstalled European Painting Galleries

In November 2023, the Metropolitan Museum of Art reopened its full suite of 45 galleries dedicated to European paintings from 1300 to 1800, following the completion of an extensive skylight renovation project that began in 2018.

Look Again: European Paintings 1300-1800 is made up of a chronological sequence of displays that showcase more than 700 works from the museum’s famous holdings. Through fresh dialogues and thematic groupings, the newly reconfigured galleries illuminate the interconnectedness of cultures, materials, and moments in the collection. This is done by including recently acquired paintings, significant loans, select sculptures and works of decorative arts in the presentation.

CODARTfocus

This online CODARTfocus offered CODART Members the unique opportunity to explore the reinstalled galleries together with Adam Eaker, Associate Curator, and Anna-Claire Stinebring, Assistant Curator of European Paintings. After a video introduction to the presentation, the curators presentated on the plans for the reinstallment and the changes that have been implemented over the past year. What are the lessons they have learned since the opening of the galleries in November 2023 and how are they looking ahead to continue to reanimate the permanent collection in the years ahead? The event concluded with a question-and-answer session moderated by Dr. Lara Yeager-Crasselt, Curator of European Painting and Sculpture and Department Head at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

The edited recording of the meeting is available below. It includes both presentations and a brief narrated video tour.
